Just so you know where I stand on the whole coffee issue, I drink my coffee strong and black, and I like Starbucks regular coffee. I had high hopes for this Ethiopian blend, but as soon as I opened the bag I was disappointed. Normally upon opening a coffee container, there's a strong aroma of coffee that's very pleasant. With this coffee, nothing. I brewed it following directions and the result was a fairly acceptable cup of coffee. But, really, my usual Wegmans Columbian, or even Wegmans French Roast beats it for aroma and flavor hands down. I wouldn't throw this away, but I wouldn't pay a premium for it either.

Note: this review is for the Brown Gold Ethiopian coffee, not any of the other varieties on this Amazon page.The title to this review characterizes my reaction after brewing some of this coffee and tasting it. There was essentially no coffee flavor to the stuff. Instead I had a nondescript hot brown beverage. Curious, I reopened the bag and took a sniff. Even with my nose thrust into the bag, bare inches away from the ground coffee, the aroma was faint and anemic. For comparison, I opened a bag of Peet's Coffee (Major Dickason's blend) I had nearby. The contrast was huge, with the Peet's smelling rich and strong and delicious, the way coffee is supposed to. And this in spite of the fact that my Peet's Coffee was whole beans rather than ground.I wonder if I got a bag that's been sitting on a back shelf in a warehouse for 8 or 10 years -- that's what it tastes and smells like.

Rating coffee is very subjective. It all depends on what kind of coffee you like, whether you like it strong, etc. I like the type of coffee they serve at Peet's Coffee or Starbucks, and I buy coffee at Trader Joes or Whole Foods. I prepared Brown Gold Ethiopian in a drip coffee maker with a cone filter, and while it is a big step up from grocery store coffee in a can, it doesn't quite have the flavor of the best coffee. It is strong, with the right touch of bitterness, but it needs a bit more flavor. I'd be happy to be served this in a restaurant, but it is not quite flavorful enough to buy for home.Gourmet coffee is typically sold by the variety of bean (Sumatra, Java, etc), whereas Brown Gold calls this simply "Ethiopian" rather than one of the Ethiopian varieties like Harrar or Yirgacheffe.
