Although I prefer the lower-priced sibling - Cafe Pilon - this is truly a five star coffee, and especially so if your tastes run towards smooth brews.In order to understand why this is not my personal preference compared to Pilon's other roast, I grew up drinking Italian and European espresso. Those are characterized by a slight bitterness that is prized by folks who enjoy those coffees. Of course the first time I tried Cuban coffee I became hooked.Those coffees lacked the bitter notes of the European roasts, but have a richness and aroma that appealed to my palate. Naturally I had to try this one since I love the Cafe Pilon regular roast. Unfortunately it was too smooth. Of course personal tastes are as individual as snowflakes, but the smoothness of this particular roast and the beans seemed to also diminish the thick richness.I make my espressos in a Bialetti 6800 Moka Express 6-Cup Stovetop Espresso Maker. That pot works best with a grind that is not too fine, and I found the grind of this coffee to be ideal for that maker.Overall, if you love Cuban coffees, but want something a little smoother than the normal fare - but still rich - this is worth a try. If you like your coffee super strong with a hint of bitterness you may not enjoy this premium roast as much as Pilon's regular one.
