Surprisingly not bad...but

I will admit I am a Starbucks junky. My favorite coffee in t-disk was the Cafe Verona. I think that Kraft blew it big time in their dust up with Starbucks and the loss of that coffee provider hit them pretty hard. I don't see ads for Tassimo makers like I used to here at the holidays. I just see the ads and info for Keurig, specially since Keurig now appears to be offering Starbucks in their line up. So, before totally giving up on the Tassimo (and I still have the first generation model, not the Bosch model), I thought I would wait and try the substitutes offered up by Gevalia. I have tried the Italian Roast, finally. The pros:It is not too bad. It does not fool you into thinking you are drinking Verona, BUT, it beats anything else that is available thus far. It is more flavorful that the Maxwell House French Roast. I did notice that it only offers a 6 oz fill - the disk resemebles the Starbucks size disk, but there is no pause when you press the button (for the hot water to get into the pod and "steep" several seconds). The button is pushed and the water starts to flow and never stops until done. Short cup though. A bit cheaper than the Starbucks pods - a good thing right? The cons:It makes a short cup - and if you want more volume by pressing the button for more water - the brew will be watered down. I think the former Verona disk at least gave 7 ozs - or maybe my memory is playing tricks on me since I have been without it for so long now...I have also ordered the Gevalia new breakfast roast - bold and it just came. I will come back and report on that flavor.I have ordered a Keurig platinum from QVC- good price and lots of extra k-cups. Haven't unpacked it yet as I was waiting to try out the new Gevalia flavors before final decision. I have read the reviews of both machines, and frankly, as we haven't had any real trouble with the Tssimo despite its age, the complaints about the Keurig are a little concerning. So... wish this wasn't such a big hassle and that I could stick with my Tassimo, but can't stand weak coffee and lack of good decafs for night time drinking has been a nuisance. The other appeal of the Keurig is the amount of variety they seem to have arranged and the fact that I can buy the k-cups in my supermarket without making a trip to Bed Bath & Beyond.

Sbux? ... Far From Reality

My favorite joe for the Tassimo is still the Cafe Verona (as I stocked up as soon as it was being cut from Tassimo) as well as the Kitamu. I actually had a cup of Verona this morning on my way to work and a 2nd one at work. When I got back home my shipment of new offerings from Tassimo had arrived. As I opened the box the first thing I saw on the new fancy wrapper is a T-disck shape with 'If you like Starbucks Verona try this!*' I actually laughed but yet I was still full of hope for a true copy cat match that would satisfy my Verona cravings.1st Cup Review:I am drinking it exactly as I fix my Verona cups; which is with little sugar and a touch of 'Le Creme' creamer. You can tell right away that the arabica beans used in this coffee are from a very different region that the marvelous mix used in the Verona. However, I am not saying that the coffee itself is bad, but it is far from what the Verona is. As an auto analogy, the Nissan 370 can be almost as fast as a Porsche 911 around Nurburging; but the Nissan will never be a 911. I will comeback for an update once I have another AM cup.Update AM cup:So I tried the coffee black; even though the packaging says Extra Bold; it is not quite so, maybe bold but not extra bold. The coffee just misses the mark when trying to compare itself to the full rich flavor of the Verona. The T-Discs are the same size of the Sbux, but as it is brewing it brews a little too fast, you can clearly see the color of the brew is not as dark as the Sbux variety.Summary:I think Gevalia/Tassimo blew it by comparing this to the Verona as that is a very tall order to compete with. They should of just left the mentioning of the Sbux's name off and trying to make a name of themselves. As I said before, the coffee is not bad but it is not great either; I'll enjoy my cups by finding the right mix of Le Creme added to find the perfect fix. Would I buy it again? Not a full price, but on sale as I did this one maybe.** Medium to bold flavor with that classic metallic aftertaste that many Gevalia coffees have.

The best of the full size extra bold dark roasts, but it's no $tarbux..

Out of all the blends for the Tassimo, this is one of my favorite that produces at least 6 oz of a dark brew that isn't consumed in two gulps. ...(my favorite taste-wise is still the pricey, but short sized Maestro Lorenza Crema.....Mastro Lorenzo Crema Coffee, T-Discs for Tassimo Coffeemakers, 16-Count Packages (Pack of 2)).The price here isn't bad, but I've been getting this at Bed,Bath& Beyond and using my $5 off coupon for two packages, so it works out to about $5.35 per pack. One tip on using these disks.....I find that if you press the start button and then stop it right after the water starts to flow through the disk (i.e., press the start/stop button after the grounds get wet to stop the brewing process and allow the grounds to steep in the water for a few seconds), and then reset the device (i.e., open the claw and then close it again, and then hit the start button for the regular cycle), you'll get a somewhat richer cup of coffee. The old Tassimo Starbucks disk was programmed to permit this steeping process to occur automatically and it seems to work.I haven't tried the other extra bold Tassimo blend yet, (which is the same price as the Gevalia Dark Italian roast at BB&B, but almost double the price here for the two pack Gevalia Dark House Blend, 12-Count T-Discs for Tassimo Coffeemakers(Pack of 2) ), but I'll report back after I purchase (again, using the $5 coupon at BB&B).
